What is the difference between (a) illusion & (b) allusion ? illusion: it is something that is different from what it actually is. For example, the mirage in a desert creates the illusion of the presence of water. It is an illusion because there is no such water. In the photo below, both lines are of equal length, but there is the illusion of a being longer than b. Examples: The flight simulator gives you the illusion of being in a real plane. They used paint to create the illusion of metal. Illusion can also mean a wrong idea. Example: All progress is illusion. Allusion: an indirect or implied reference in literature. Also the use of such references. Examples: The lyrics contain biblical allusions. It means the lyrics contain indirect references to the bible. T.S. Eliot alludes to Chaucer in the opening lines of The Wasteland.
