“What is there possibly left for us to be afraid of, after we have dealt face to face with death and not embraced it? Once I accept the existence of dying as a life process, who can ever have power over me again?” ― Audre Lorde, The Cancer Journals Audre Lorde, who was a caribbean-American human rights activist, radical feminist, and fearless writer, battled breast cancer and liver cancer for the last fourteen years of her life. She recorded and published her battle in The Cancer Journals and appeared in a biographical documentary titled A Litany for Survival: The Life and Work of Audre Lorde before succumbing to her illness at the age of 58 in 1992. The legacy of women writers fighting illness lives on with AROHO’s Beyond the Pink Ribbon: Breast Cancer Survivor Fellowship, created and sponsored by survivors and past Retreat Participants Liz Bedell and Lisa Lutwyche, to attend and contribute to the 2015 Retreat & Waves Discussion Series. This year’s theme is Writing Against the Current, so summon your resilience once more and share your story with a convergence of open-hearted women writers and artists for a week at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. Application and details here: bit.ly/SnNyua The deadline to apply is August 15, 2014.
