What is wrong with humanity? “Anyone who cannot cope with life while he is alive needs one hand to ward off a little his despair over his fate...but with his other hand he can jot down what he sees among the ruins, for he sees different and more things than the others; after all, he is dead in his own lifetime and the real survivor,” Franz Kafka After the horrific suicide of a man in the Johannesburg CBD Thursday afternoon and then the stabbing of a large wild cat on Friday morning, one can only wonder what is wrong with society today? The crowd on the corner of Bree and Simmonds Streets witnessed a man clutching to a Bible on the fifth floor and shouted, “Jump! Jump! Jump!” after he started reading scriptures. What kind of people shout a man to his death? Are we that heartless? The poor wild cat was a cerval, which the stabbers had confused for a cheetah, instead of contacting the police or SPCA. The cerval would not have attacked people, unless threatened. Stabbing it to death was, once again, heartless and uncalled for. As members of society, we should take all lives into consideration. We should not act on impulse or dramatic justification. A human life, which was fragile through depression and difficult circumstances, was forced off existence. His poor family and friends. And the wild cat, which was probably lost and scared, was forced to suffer and bleed to death. According to poet Lord Byron there are four questions of value in life: What is sacred?
