Some of them were outspoken, clearly leader material, some were openhearted and eager to help everyone, some were timid, not seeming to have a voice of their own. And again some of them were the constant bourgeoisie, the ones who looked down on everyone else or even made their classmates feel inferior. And some others were quite brave when it came to facing difficulties and condescending behaviors in school. Still an important number of students did not seem self confident enough to be able to cope with all the teasing and others’ dignity reducing comments. It is those students that I want to address right now. The ones that have it in them to shine and illuminate others, but need some courage to do so. The ones that need some time to look at themselves more deeply and discover that the treasures hidden inside them are not supposed to stay buried in obscurity! So, dear student… Listen… and listen carefully! Let the echo of my voice flood each single cell of yours and allow it to remind you what it is, that makes YOU unique and special! It is not how you look! You are way too tall for others to reach… And sometimes not tall enough for others to see you… Quite big for their liking… Or maybe just too small to make sense to their world… Pretty invisible to a diva’s arrogant eye… It is not even how you act! Your overly mature brain is no match for other people’s narrow-mindedness… Your polite manners might be misinterpreted for naivety. Your kind remarks do not seem to find a ready acceptance because to some people’s ears they somehow sound derogatory and disparaging… It is definitely not how you perform and accomplish things. Your numerous potentials might not even be noticed by some. Your effort to cope and your infinite endeavors quite often seem to go unrewarded, even if you had to try harder than anyone else to achieve your goal… It is, however, all about how you feel! And you have every reason to feel special! It is you, like a knight in shiny armor, who strives on a daily basis to kill the monsters of indifference. It is you, a princess shut in a wall tower, who longs and fights for some air of freedom! It is you, a teenager whose voice has been deprived of, who refuses to stay mute and invisible. You!!! One amongst many… A special soul aiming for the embellishment of our world with the virtue of love… Accomplishing, in your own silent way, to come over indifferent looks and contemptuous comments, to stand on your feet and take the next step towards your bright future. It is you, who I am talking to. It is you I am coaxing this very instant to realize your magnitude and magnanimity… To defy the violent winds of indifference and raise your face towards the sun… To start shining and filling our world with your mystique, your delicate fragrances, your amazing personality! It is you… who I admire the most… my brave student… my special hero!
