What television programs did you watch in your youth? After - TopicsExpress

What television programs did you watch in your youth? After watching a video of the opening credits from Sunday night TV shows from 1964, I decided to go back to the weekly schedules of TV shows for Fall 1964 through Spring 1965. In those days we only had a few channels, so fewer choices. The great thing about this is that we shared common cultural references. We could talk about the programs we watched the previous day, knowing that there was a good chance others had watched the same thing. Reconstructing our familys TV schedule was more difficult than I thought, as some of the shows I remember watching were scheduled at the same time. Perhaps we watched reruns of some of the shows during the summer months. In 1964 – 1965, on Sunday nights we typically watched Lassie (my mom was always good for a cry during that one), My Favorite Martian, The Ed Sullivan Show, and Bonanza … all on CBS. But I also remember watching Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color … so that must have been in the summertime in reruns? Monday nights we watched Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and then the Andy Griffith Show and Lucy. I always have loved Lucy. It’s funny, but I have no memory of some of the Monday shows, like No Time for Sergeants. Tuesday was the Men From U.N.C.L.E. and Petticoat Junction … and my parents WOULD NOT allow me to watch Peyton Place, even though I asked them repeatedly. It was way too risqué. I probably wanted to watch it only because my parents wouldn’t allow it. I had a tougher time remembering Wednesday nights. Definitely watched Mr. Ed. Not sure about the Patty Duke Show … but always watched the Beverly Hillbillies and the Dick Van Dyke Show. How many times did Rob trip over that footstool? Thursday was the Munsters, My Three Sons, Bewitched and Hazel. Loved Hazel. Friday it was the Rawhide, Addams Family and Gomer Pyle … but I don’t remember a lot of the other shows that night. The Farmer’s Daughter? Twelve o’clock Eye? Did anyone watch these shows? Saturday Flipper, Mr. Magoo, and Gilligan’s Island. And sometimes I watched the Outer Limits and got scared out of my wits (when my parents weren’t supervising me … otherwise, they wouldn’t let me watch it.) I often had nightmares after watching this show. I know we only had one TV in those days. I think we actually got our first color TV in 1964 … because I remember the NBC Peacock in all of its living color … and that being quite a new thing for the family. In looking over the schedule, I wonder how much influence I had over what the family watched. Or perhaps my parents and sister wanted to watch the comedies and more lighthearted stuff. Many happy memories of family times. What was your family’s TV schedule in 1964/65? Or if you weren’t alive then, what are the first TV shows you remember watching? Your favorites? Now we can revisit our youth anytime on Youtube! ☺
