What were reading this week: HYPERBOLE AND A HALF The internet comic artist ALLIE BROSH becomes a published author with the first printed collection of her work (that isnt me printing out comics from her blog and showing them to people going, You have to read this! She is SO funny!). Intentionally crude drawings done in a basic paint program are paired with elegant prose, highlighting the exquisite contradiction of a woman who, like many comedians, struggles to balance a keen and brilliant mind with a weird and awkward exterior. HYPERBOLE AND A HALF (THE BOOK!) recounts the adventures of her two spastic and neurotic dogs; her original method of circumventing a pet peeve; stories of her childhood that are both hilarious and insightful into adolescent psychology; and, in perhaps her most important comics of all, descriptions of her struggles with mental illness, which manage to be deeply moving, relatable, and laugh-out-loud funny. As someone who suffers from the same disease, I can say on a personal level Ive never seen the experience of Depression explained so perfectly and so clearly in any psychology textbook as Brosh does in her comic. HYPERBOLE AND A HALF would make for a fantastic holiday gift, sure to incite laughs! Get your copy at Black Oak Books today!
