What you may not know about BOYD, but its worth knowing. During our 4th year, we won a competitive RFP from the Trenton Board Of Education for $58,000. We were to administer parent programs at 3 schools. BOYD created the parent of the month, student and parent lunch day, and game and movie night. Our first mission was to gain parents trust and the old thinking, provide food and theyll come was not working. Because I was working I felt that the money should be invested back into the schools we serviced directly to the parents. Our first stop was CH Martin on Scotch Rd. We purchased over $5000 in things from comforters, flat ware, irons and ironing boards, wash cloths and towels, 20 piece plate sets, and much. We then went to Shop Rite and purchased $1000 in gift cards ranging from $25-$100. Not finished we purchased gift cards to restaurants as well. Our last stop was Barnes and Noble to buy parenting books over $4000 worth of books. Now we were ready to deliver services. Our first parent night was heavily attended because we marketed through the students. If students came with their parents they would get to attend a private pizza and ice cream party! So the place was packed! We didnt have any food to give, however we had gifts! Each person received a ticket once they signed in at the end if us explaining the program we acknowledge the first three people that arrived on time. The first received $100 gift card to shop rite, the second $50 to shop rite and 3rd $25 to shop rite. Then the raffles items comforters , plates, gift cards to dinner, and much more! Needless to say we never provided food but everything we had at the schools the were heavily attended. The last act was having teacher nominate a parent of the year, that parent received a parent of the year plaque and the family received a weekend getaway to Williamsbugh VA 7 families in total, with passes to Water Country USA. No other organization has ever taking a bold stance like that with winning a RFP. Why did I do it? Because I was homegrown. I lived and saw what was needed. I had food for a night but a gift card to purchase more food could really help me. After one year it was too much like right and they used the title 1 money to do something different. Just imagine if we could received another contract for subsequent years. In one year we created a culture of school was the playing field for team students. We all learned, parents teachers administrators and children. Why was that important? #TrentonMadeMe #IAmBOYD
