Whatever happened to Gabriella Cilme? Five years ago Gabriella was the young 16 year old we were marvelling about, as we are today about 17 year old Lorde and Birdy. “Sweet About ” made Cilme the youngest Australian singer to achieve a No.1. The back story was that she’d been discovered at the age of 13 and carefully groomed into her music career in the intervening years. I remember going to a record company showcase before the single was released and thinking , even so ,how unready she was. That proved the case when the single and the album ‘Lessons To Be Learned’ were released. She’d been developed musically and sent around the word in search of a record company and producers but was thrown to the wolves when it came to facing the media. I interviewed her. She came across as naive 16 year old caught in the headlights. That shouldn’t have been allowed to happen. Worse followed when the bluesy ballsy singer was turned into a stock standard disco pop singer for her second album. If it had worked we’d be talking differently, It didn’t work. We forgot about Gabrielle quicker than we’d discovered her. What happened to Gabriella Cilme? She recently released her third album, ’The Sting” something of a return to “form”.
