Whats in a Name: I was just reading in the Japan Times (English Newspaper) that scientists have finished analysing the ancient, name-card size, piece of papyrus, named The Gospel of Jesus Wife which was discovered a few years ago.. According to scholars, the artifact is the real deal. So, I have a question for any theologians reading this: if Jesus, did indeed, have a wife - lets imagine it was Mary Magdalene - would that have made her Mrs. Christ? But that then begs the question was, Christ Jesus family name? He was the son of a carpenter - Joseph Christ? What if Josephs family name had been Hammer; his family name depicting his vocation - Joseph Hammer. It seems to me that family names, way back in the days of Noah and before, would have been decided by the work that a person or family did. For example: a pot maker - Iris Potter, a farmer - Peter Gardener, a bread maker - Tom Baker and so forth. Obviously my ancestors would have been coffin and box makers. For those that may not know, during the Japanese era of Edo - three or four hundred years ago - Japanese people had no first name. I imagine Japanese family names were also chosen by the type of employment or perhaps where they lived: Ishihara - stone field, Yamashita - under the mountain, Tanaka - in the middle of a rice paddy, etc. Perhaps I should have been an etymologist instead of a writer of inane, otiose bullshit. Have a nice Friday.
