Whats on my mind?? GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR rant warning! There used to be some great little shops in Perth, places where you could go and get unusual stuff, where they had a niche, kept a particular range, the staff were knowledgeable cause they used the stuff, they could show you how to use it and give you tips, it was friendly and personal. Then the big super shops muscled in. They stocked the same stuff as the smaller places but their buying power meant they could buy big and sell for less. Predictably people went for the low cost. They were short sighted and didnt think about how abandoning the small personal stores would impact them... things continued for awhile... until the small places just couldnt match the big boys and make a living... so all the little specialist stores closed... Once that goal was achieved the super shops did what they always do - they rationalised for maximum profit. This meant that they cut the range or stopped it all together, stocking only the goods with the biggest profit margin. The result? We can now only go to a couple of places and get the same very limited range, sold by disinterested staff who have little or no clue about what they are selling but hey, they can say have a nice day. So, buy online people say. Huh! No comparison. I cant feel the texture or weight, I cant smell it or generally get the feel of it. And there is definitely no expert who gets to know me and is genuinely friendly... My recent experience was with art supplies in particular but this model applies to all specialist stores unless they manage to fit the hip and funky place of the moment vibe. Wake up peeps - when you fail to support the great small businesses, you lose - we lose and we move steadily closer to the McDonalds world view and away from community minded stores where you get more than just your goods. rant over
