What’s Up with “Up”? What’s up with the word “up“? Did you know that this little word has more meanings than any other two letter word? Here are some of the everyday ways we use this word: Every morning the sun comes up, then you wake up. At work, a topic comes up. You write up a report. You suck up to your boss. You call up your friend after you look up her number. You ask her “What’s up?” You can’t hear her, so you tell your kids to shut up and ask your friend to speak up. You work up an appetite, you use up the leftovers which you warm up in the microwave, then eat up. You clean up the kitchen. Sometimes the drain gets stopped up. You lock up your house. You walk up the road or travel up north. You sign up for yoga classes. You get twisted up like a pretzel. You pass up a great opportunity. You screwed up again! You fix up your car. You top up the gas tank. You throw up when you’re sick and tear up when you’re sad. You line up for a movie. If it’s an action film, a lot of things got blown up. You get up out of your seat. It feels good to stand up for a change. You keep your wardrobe up to date. Sometimes you dress up for a special occasion. When you’re single, you hook up. When you’re married, you mess up, apologize, then kiss and make up. My time is up, so I’ll wrap this up.
