What’s up with technology? While sitting in the doctors office instead of reading magazines now I’m even seeing old people trying to pass time playing with their phones, Ipads and tablets. I have to admit I have a kindle that I use to play audio books on since my eyes have gotten weak and it reminds me of when families would gather around the radio and listen to radio programs before TV. I wonder if these devices are really helping us, everybody looking down thumbs going a hundred miles an hour never looking up, not knowing where we’re going, butchering the English Language with one letter words. How many times have you sat at a traffic light behind someone not paying attention looking down texting. And I was worried about people driving while talking on their cell phones a few years ago but texting has brought a new dimension. There was a time when there wasn’t a thing called air-conditioning and on summer evenings people sat on their front porches hoping for a breeze while talking to their next door neighbors. Then radio and TV took us back inside never to talk to our neighbor again. Yes, we would say that all these new inventions have helped us but somehow I feel like we are growing farther apart. How many people have you spoken to that live on your block? Do you know your neighbor or even care about him? But we have a hundred friends on Facebook and a few will give us a “Like” or a short sentence after posting some sort of nonsense. I guess we think we are in touch with them but in reality it’s sad. And then all of a sudden a person stretches their arm way in front of themselves and takes a picture? I think they call it a “taking a selfie”, I call it “taking a lonely”.
