When I Think of a Veteran It’s my Dad Uniform of brown An Indian patch on the shoulder Served in WWII on European ground A brother Crossed pistols, like me Policing duty In grand old Germany Or my son Camouflage fatigues The eagle, globe and anchor He wore in Hungary Another son Property of the US Army Stationed in Hawaii Another branch of this family tree My daughter A cook in the Air Force Kept them flying During their desert discourse The uncle The uniform jungle green Duty on patrol During the Vietnam scene And the ancestor Blood his attire did mar One of those who wore blue Fallen in the Civil War There are my comrades Serving to take a stand An operation called Desert Storm Where the line was drawn in the sand Our young men and women Missing arms, legs and hands Victims of IEDs In Iraq and Afghanistan People who serve Their God and their country Performing the solemn oath That keeps us all free Those willing to sacrifice Life, limb, all that is dear Day and night, 24/7 At home, in places far and near Humanitarian missions Disaster relief Fighting fires Preserving the peace Ready to defend Regardless of race, creed or color No greater love the Bible says Than to lay down life for another When I think of a veteran I think of the gun and sword The ragtag Army of the Potomac A place called Valley Forge As I think of veterans People just like me or you A tear may fall out of pride or sorrow For all the things they do
