When I changed majors in college from music to computer science, I - TopicsExpress

When I changed majors in college from music to computer science, I signed up for Calculus I. Before the first day of class, the prof called me into his office for a chat about my prerequisites. He thought I had not had enough previous math to handle his class, even though I had taken Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Precalculus and Trig IN COLLEGE (and aced all of them - since I didnt go to high school my math education was lacking, and I made up for it by taking remedial non-credit math classes in college). This guy chose to focus on the fact that I had ALSO taken math for liberal arts majors (before I had been won over by math and science). He tried as hard as he could to get me to drop that class but I refused. I knew for sure I had all the prereqs and I knew I would ace his class, and I did. I aced Calc I, Calc II, Calc III, and many other Math classes. At least, at the end of that term, my discouraging Calc I prof had the decency to give me the A I earned. My Discrete I math prof was not so even handed. I earned a solid B in his class even though, upon comparing my exam answers with my peers, I found that my male peers earned higher scores on their exams for the same answers I gave and I fully understood the material. I earned As in Discrete math II and III after his class. Went on to graduate in the top ten computer science majors in my class. Despite those jerks who tried to keep me away from learning their knowledge. That was in 1998... true story.
