When I got to the hospital today, Richmond was hanging out in his wheelchair in the nurses station macking with the ladies. Of course, he would deny that but everyone was smiling. Although the nurses and therapists would like for him to rest more, Richmond seems to enjoy the company. Ive explained to them that Richmond has always had people around him. Our house was always filled with kids. We had our four and each if them had scads of friends who hung out here. If things got quiet, Richmond was always the first one to hit the door looking for a party or an event ; there was never a dull moment. From what I have read about brain injuries, the patient struggles to find himself again. This seems to be true with Richmond. Today he mentioned his posse referring to what we called his group of friends. His posse has been extremely loyal to him during his enforced incarceration ( translate-hospital stay). From his first buddy in kindergarten, Michael Shay, to middle school buddies, high school friends, college buddies, fraternity brothers ( Belmont Abbey and ECU, business friends, and Greensboro friends, just about anyone he ever met has come to see him and offer support for us. That, my friends is who our son is. Note that I did not saywas. Our Richmond is in there struggling to get out among them again. We see flashes of the boy/son/man everyday. He is working so hard to get back, but sometimes he seems unsure of where backis really. The pamphlets say that we should expect some personality changes. Maybe yes, maybe no. It takes time. Oh, there is that too. Yesterday, Luana mentioned that it was May. Richmond said,May? He has no idea how long it has been, but we do. We will forever remember this dreadful month, but I am glad that he has been spared that memory. April 2014 will never be a month that any of us will remember fondly. Luana has taken pictures of him with all the accessories from the icu to rehab. One day when he is ready, she will show him how far he has come. He still has a long way to go, but he is trying all the time to get back to his life. Today he said that he wanted to go home. He was unsure of where home is, but he remembered enough to know that hed rather be there that sitting in a wheelchair in the family room at the hospital. Yes, we still need prayers. Please dont stop praying for the day that this too will be a memory. Hillstrong! Amen.
