When I graduated from veterinary school, I took an oath that says, in part, I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention and relief of animal suffering.... Foie gras is diseased liver, deliberately induced for peoples gustatory pleasure - about as far as you can get from protecting animal welfare and preventing suffering. You cant even make the argument that some greater good is served, because its only purpose is to satisfy the selfish desire of high end consumers. If it were to go away, nobody would starve and no great harm would befall society, and maybe, just maybe, wed be a slightly kinder species for it.
