When I was a child, my most exultant dreams were to fly - not in some machine, but by myself. I used to begin by jumping and, slowly, I was able to raise my trajectory. Each time it took longer to fall. Shortly, I was in such a high arch that I no longer dropped. In this dream - which I have had at least a hundred times, with lots of variations - the flying demanded a certain mental state. It is impossible to put this state into words, but I can still remember the sensation. It was necessary to do some thing inside my head and in the stomach, and then I got to fly only by force of will. Carl Sagan, reading my mind, in The Pale Blue Dot.
