When I was born again about 21 years a go, I thought that God was a stern and strict judge. God knew everything that I did and even everything that I thought. God would punish me for every bad action and every bad thought. If I was good enough, I would go to heaven when I died and would be happy forever. If I was not good enough, I would go to hell when I died and would suffer the torture of flames forever and ever. There would be no end to the punishment. As I look back, I was motivated to be good, not because it was virtuous, but because I was scared not to. Love has little chance to grow in such a situation.
