When I was growing up I heard of sponsored walks and similar events once every now and then so why is it that now barely an hour goes by without hearing of someone trying to raise money for some charity or another. How is it that as society supposedly advances we seem to need charities more and more. Is it because successive governments have abrogated their responsibilities and expected charities to take up the slack , that people now use charity fundraising as an excuse for what is essentially a holiday or that since the creation of the National Lottery people have accepted charity as a substitute for investment? Whatever the reason surely the increase in need for charity fundraising is an embarrassment to what is supposed to be a civilised society.
