When I was growing up and even today reading a Kikuyu bible before - TopicsExpress

When I was growing up and even today reading a Kikuyu bible before a congregation was always a challenge. In our PCEA church at Munyange there was an old elder called George Magu who knew the wordings the bible cover to cover. Magu (RIP) was the father to Wairua the tea clerk, remember him? And grandpa to Eng. Joel Wairua. Magu was buried in the church compound. So one Christmas day a high school girl was asked to read the bible. The church was full to capacity. The reading was about the people who went to see baby Jesus. The kikuyu bible reads "na magikarehere manemane" (and they brought him gifts). My student saw her own things so she read out "na magikarehere mananathi" meaning they brought him pinapples. Magu wave at her to stop and told her "ti mananathi ni manemane" The church echoed in laughter as the girl was almost sinking down in embarassment. She never read the bible there again.
