When I was in London, I read somewhere an opinion piece, lamenting how the world does not produce visionary and inspiring leaders anymore. The world thought it had Barack Obama but he got mired in petty and tawdry squabbles with the Republicans in Congress. The likes of Kennedy, Reagan and even Clinton are no more. The coalition leaders of the Conservative and Labour parties in the UK have failed miserably to inspire even their own people. France no longer have their de Gaulles and Mitterrands. In Asia and Africa, people like Mahathir, Nkrumah, Sukarno, Sadat, Mandela, Lee Kuan Yew are no more too. Even the present Secretary-General of United Nations is no longer of a stature of someone like Kofi Annan. One of the reasons posited why this has come to being was because of the internet and especially, social media - leaders are forced to respond to petty and nitty-gritty granular aspects of governing. No more awe-inspiring lofty ideals, high speeches and glory for country, civilisation and mankind. Sad, huh?
