When I was in St. Kitts several years back at the Uddenberg reunion, I was talking to a retired police officer. He told me that some of the families from Portugal, including the Viera, had about 30% of their immigrants from Jewish heritage. To avoid persecution they converted to Catholicism to avoid persecution. He told me that his mother, although Catholic, would at home secretly celebrate the Jewish feast days.
