When Imam Ahmad heard of a group of people who did not follow the instructions of Hadeeth and followed the opinion of Sufyan Al Thawri and questioned him about his knowledge. He said: I wonder at people who are sure of the authenticity of the Hadeeth reported from the Messenger of Allah and then follow the opinion of Sufyan. Allah (Subhanahu Wa Taala) states: And let those who oppose the Messenger’s (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah - legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements) (among the sects) beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant) should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them. (Quran 24:63) - Quoted by Shaykh Abd al-Rahmaan ibn Qaasim (may Allah have mercy on him) in Al-Durar al-Saniyyah fil-Ajoobah al-Najdiyyah 1/47.
