When Irish Eyes Are Smiling - They Sing Moravian Hymns John Cennick, a Moravian evangelist and hymnist, was reared in the Anglican Church. He converted to the Methodist movement after meeting John Wesley. Eventually Cennick allied with the Calvinistic Methodists. In the mid 1740s Cennick converted to Moravianism. While preaching in London in 1744, Cennick was invited to Dublin to preach. There at least 2 churches were later established. Neither is still active today. Cennick then moved to the Ulster Province where he founded approximately 220 Moravian Societies between 1747 & 1752. Some congregations were also established in Counties Galway and Clare (west coast of Ireland). The Moravians were one of the groups of the Dissenting Protestants (DPs) in Ireland. They were distinct from the Established Anglican Church of Ireland. Although members of the DPs did not suffer in the same way as those in the Catholic Church, “they were subject to ‘disabilities’ such as exclusions from high office and liability to pay tithes.” The remaining 5 Moravian Churches in Ireland are in Northern Ireland, formerly in the Ulster Province which consisted of the six counties and the parliamentary boroughs of Belfast and Londonderry (the city of Derry) that currently make up Northern Ireland. It also included three other counties which were assigned to the Irish Free State (now Ireland) by the Government of Ireland Act of 1920. Counties Dublin, Galway and Clare are also part of the independent state of Ireland. References: Memorial Inscriptions from the Moravian Cemetery, Whitechurch, County Dublin by Sean J.
