When Lincoln spoke the words Four score and seven years ago in the Gettysburg address on this day, November 19th 1863, he was referring to the Declaration of Independence. Do you consider it ironic Lincoln invoked a document that represented a revolution fought over secession and independence from an oppressive government while Lincoln himself was fighting to maintain federal power over states that were then considered sovereign?
