When Sunny first came to me he found approaching people very challenging. When we were out walking he wouldnt run away, but he did not recall, instead he would sometimes sit and I could approach him to get him back on leash. I decided that this was an ok alternative to recalling for the purpose of walking in our woods. He had been kept on a longline until I was sure he wouldnt run off and never be seen again. I used the longline to prompt and train wait. I was not specific about him holding a position, I just wanted him to stop moving away from me. He began to come to me for his pay-off, and that was ok with me. So wait in this case doesnt mean stop and dont move it means stop moving away from me. We can decide if we want a dog to not move when asked to stay or wait. I didnt care, I needed a behavior so I could get him back on leash and this one does that. In this video I am stopping him before he goes up the driveway at a neighbors house to see whats in his burn pile. He also caught a cat there once so the location is very tempting for him. Dogs will choose from the most reinforcing options available to them. With repetition, high value reinforcers, and no cats or trash providing reinforcement for a long time, we can tip the scales in our favor. This was not trained using any piece of equipment other than a longline and a can of cheese.
