When a fellow soldier was injured carrying him from a battle in Saipan during WWII, Sgt. Thomas Baker Jr. told the solider to leave without him. His Medal of Honor citation stated Sgt. Baker “preferred to be left to die rather than risk the lives of any more of his friends.” He was propped up against a tree with a cigarette and a pistol holding eight bullets. The citation stated his body was found days later “in the same position, gun empty, with 8 Japanese lying dead before him.”
