When a person goes to therapy or serves as a therapist, there are many different machinations that occur during counseling sessions. One of those phenomenon is called “Mirror and Idealizing Transferences” and this often occurs when a therapist and counselee begin the long process of counseling. Transference occurs sporadically and is conditional on the topic and progress of the treatment. However in order for treatment to be successful the therapist must realize that transference is occurring thus enabling the counselor in helping his/her patient redeem their own self-worth without having to rely solely on others for their own validation. When thinking therapeutically on this subject, I began to wonder if we don’t do the same thing with God. Do we not transfer what we would like God to symbolize and represent so that we can feel self-worth through upholding or living within the values that we place on God? The adjectives with which we give God names are many. We call him a “merciful” God, a “just” God, a “loving” God and even a God of “judgment and truth” just to name a few. The values that we uphold, find important and which serve our own self-worth are those we believe that God values, and thus we transfer to Him and then back to ourselves through Him what we need for validation. Is this type of relationship with God authentic and worthwhile? Who are we to answer this question? This sort of relationship can become both personally authentic and worthwhile as long as the values we transfer to God and back are for the betterment of ourselves and society. For in this manner not only will God have a positive influence in the world, but so will we.
