When as a child of about ten years of age, spending the summer - TopicsExpress

When as a child of about ten years of age, spending the summer with my Grandmother in Mississippi I had a life changing scare that chills me today. My grand mother had ten acres between her home and the Baptist church that she allowed revivals be held on. This summer about 1962 an all Black revival was underway and I wanted to watch. My Grandmother and my Nanny Forbid it and sent me to my room. I did sneak out and spent a short period peeking under the back of the tent. Never heard anything like the singing and praying that was going on. All of these blacks had been in this small town for generations and most if not all had grandparents that stayed there and fought the North to protect what was theirs. Wasnt long when a well dressed man entered the tent. This man had body guards and the congregation shut down immediately . This man walked to the pulpit and after looking everyone in the eye started yelling. He called those poor folks things I had never heard before. His end message was for them to get off their butts do something to better themselves, their race, and above all take care of their familys . Scared me to death and I ran to Grandmothers where I was met by Nanny who commenced to tear up my back side for seeing the great MLK giving the Black folks of Enterprise , Mississippi what for. I think today what he would say about all of the dead heads the do nothings the whiners and complainers because of our current problems. Dr. King was a man of action. I dont think he would be very happy about todays events. Kept me straight all of these years, that and a sore backside.
