When one isnt Irish, one may have corned beef and cabbage any day - TopicsExpress

When one isnt Irish, one may have corned beef and cabbage any day of the year … like today. Or, is it like Norwegians and lutefisk … one eats it only because one is expected to and not because of a holiday or even whether one likes it? And, what of vegan Irish? Dont think theyve developed seitan- or tempeh-based corned beef substitutes that pass the taste test … yet. Seems a whole meal based on soda bread, cabbage, and potatoes without the corned beef might be a bit … lacking in flavor. Then, there is the drinking. Yes, its a negative stereotype, but, back in the day, we real drunks referred to drinking holidays like St. Patricks Day and Cinco de Mayo as, amateur night. Besides, Patrick was an agent of Roman Imperialism. There were already Christians and Christian churches in Ireland, so he wasnt bringing a new religion, but the authoritarian, patriarchal, centralized, and imperial version of it that slowly marched across Europe bringing with it such treats as feudalism, the Burning Times, and the co-opting of, the old-time religions. Still, corned beef and cabbage with potatoes and rutabaga is tasty and on the stove in about 10 minutes. (Hey, you enjoy your root vegetables, Ill enjoy mine … I happen to like rutabagas.) So, Facebook? Miss me? Just dropping in with some random thoughts. (Maybe now my important posts will be seen by more than 2 people.)
