When one of the largest coal-powered plants in the US had an emergency requiring the assistance of professional divers, they only had to make one phone call. Midco Diving & Marine Services was called into action when the interior coating of a 5’ diameter condenser return pipe failed and subsequently clogged the cooling cycle shutting the unit down. Midco crews were dispatched from Louisiana, Minnesota, and from Midco’s home office in Rapid City, SD. Crews were on site within 24 hours and began working around the clock for the next 4 days to remove the failed epoxy coating. Divers had to enter thru a 22” round access hatch and descend past a butterfly valve before reaching the 90 degree elbow where the failed coating was located. The project was successful, and the plant was back on line within 5 days of the initial call.
