When people ask me why I go to University, I often reply To be wrong. I go to have my ideas challenged, to defend my arguments, and learn when I am proven wrong, finally forming a new and informed position. Any idea in a truly free society must stand up to scrutiny, examination, and critical thinking. Not examining a topic because it may make people uncomfortable, or uneasy, does not constitute a free society, much less what an institution of higher learning should stand for. We have tremendous freedom in our society, but we must never concede to fear, terror, or those who would guilt or shame us into silence. We must fearlessly question, courageously learn, and unapologetically expand our horizons. This Universitys decision represents a dangerous step backwards.
