When taking a look at the current situations in the middle east, it is quite obvious that we are very fortunate that we live in a country, which allows us to practice our faith! Here are some great facts that many do not know about our Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in Australia! 1. Our current leader, is his eminence Archbishop Stylianos 2.We have 4 bishops, with one being the first priest of All Saints Belmore, (how exciting!) 3. Bishop of NSW is His grace, Bishop Seraphim of Apollonias 4. First Church was Holy Trinity in Surry Hills (1898) 5. The first priest to serve the religious needs of the Greek Orthodox in Sydney and Melbourne was Archimandrite Dorotheos Bakaliaros 6.On the 1st September 1959 the Metropolis of Australia and New Zealand was elevated to Archdiocese and Metropolitan Ezekiel to Archbishop. 7.In 1820, a Russian Antarctic expedition pulled into the port of Sydney, where it remained for several months. The very first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in all its glory by the priest-monk Dioysii at Kirribilli Point in Sydney. 8.We have 8 Orthodox day schools 9. We have over 120 Community organizations including nuring homes and welfare centres 10. We have over 110 Churches providing spiritual and cultural centers for our orthodox community 11. We have over 100 Priests, aiding and leading or Orthodox faith in the land down under 12. We have 8 Blessed monasteries 13. We have our very own Theological College, to aid in the spiritual grown and development in the country! 14.We had a very historic and blessed Visit by His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in 1996 We must give thanks to God for what we have. Please dont for granted the amazing services and opportunities that we have in this Great nation. We are a very young community, but a very strong and thriving one! We must honour and not forget the great work and sacrifices our forefathers made. when travelling to this country. More importantly though, we must insure we continue their work and pass it onto the next generations.
