When we asked one of the locals where his favorite places to go to - TopicsExpress

When we asked one of the locals where his favorite places to go to was he recommended, Pedro & Lola in the old part of town. Googled the address and last night we jumped on a city bus ( 10 pecos...about 70 cents) and rode through the crowded streets, all the time being glad we werent driving. Past the Mercado (big market place) and got off at a quiet cross street. As we were walking on the narrow brick road I kept thinking how much the architecture reminded me of New Orleans. We knew the Germans had been part of the original colonizers. There are many German restaurants in Mazatlan and it enflenced the folk dances etc.. Later our waiter explained that the French also were there. That made since in the billings now. This area of town is near the opera. Many of the doors were open and along the way we saw in one place college age kids practicing dance. In another we saw a group of all ages rehearsing for a play, in another practicing music. There was a really unique gift shop with authentic handcrafted items like rattles made from butterfly cocoons used in traditional indigenous dances. (I want to go back there ). The restaurant was in a wonderful area next to a plaza. Local people were setting around on benches talking. A guitarist was strolling and singing. It truly was enchanting. Our waiter, Alejandro, was hilarious. As we struggled to speak Spanish, he started talking in French. Then he said he was working on his Spanish. He asked us where we were from and said, Oh Oregonians pronouncing it correctly :) then he started rattling off towns in Oregon, places and streets in Portland that you only know if youve been there a lot. Turns out he worked in Portland. Small world. My dinner came in a unique bowl... hot! Then dessert was just as unique, sweet corn tamale with cheese ice cream and chocolate sauce. Yes, it was yummy. All in all, a great great experience. We when got back to the hotel we saw a woman wed met earlier. She asked what we did for the evening. After we told her of our adventure she said, Oh, we never leave the resort, its too scary out there. You could get hurt. Nothing we could say about how safe we felt convinced her. So sad.
