When you are in the death care business, you have many - TopicsExpress

When you are in the death care business, you have many opportunities to talk with people who are going through loss. I believe there is nothing more personal than saying goodbye to someone who has been such an important part of our own lives. Frequently, we are called upon to walk with someone who is experiencing loss of a different kind. Pet loss is as tragic, in its own way, as any death experience. I have often said that the relationship between an owner and an animal is a pure, unconditional one. These pure souls do not hate, resent, hold grudges (well, except maybe Scotties), or constantly remind you of your shortcomings. They just exist beside you, grateful to be near you, and just want to have another opportunity to lick your hand one more time. Later this week, we will get our hands licked for the last time by two of our three Scotties. Time and illnesses stacked one upon another have brought us to the point where we must make the awful decision that rips at our hearts, but is the right thing to do for Rory and Fiona. The plans have been made. On Thursday, our Veterinarian has agreed to come to our home and assist these most excellent friends make their way to the Rainbow Bridge. They will be cremated together, as they have spent everyday of their lives. We will receive them back in the same container, again, as it should be. For us, the next few days will not be easy. For all our well-meaning friends out there, please do not judge harshly this decision. There are no more therapies, potions or lotions available to us to change anything. We ask only your prayers for their safe journey, and for our ability to withstand, once again, the weight of the responsibility we assumed when we brought them into our home so many years ago. I often refer to this favorite quote when a friend experiences this kind of loss. I must remember it now for myself and for Holly. Not the least hard thing to bear, when they go from us, these quiet friends, is that they carry away so many years of our own lives with them. John Galsworthy Thanks for listening.
