When you are overwhelmed, from chronic illness, depression, PTSD, - TopicsExpress

When you are overwhelmed, from chronic illness, depression, PTSD, or long term stress, you have no resiliency. You dont bounce back quickly from the simplest things (deleting old email, walking the dog, or talking on the phone -this list is a little different for everyone-). Instead they become strenuous labors that can leave you feeling physically or emotionally drained and exhausted. This is how stress accumulates, and further illness seeps into the cracks. You have no energy for the next thing. (Like cooking dinner, figuring out what to wear, or even trying to plan something fun that can help you feel better, and maybe, just maybe get a tiny bit of resiliency built). Instead, life becomes a constant balancing act of putting out the next biggest kitchen fire you CAN handle, while the castle burns down around you. On a good day, you just keep trying. But on a bad day.... Without resiliency, the immune system is compromised, the autonomic nervous system is slow to respond appropriately, and the ability to think even a few days ahead is significantly diminished. Everyone must heal in their own way, and resiliency plays a vital part in any healthy persons healing process, and natural defenses against the tiny bumps and bruises of life. Existing with damaged or diminished resiliency causes one to feel every pebble on the path like a boulder sized hurdle. It is not like healing from a small wound, it is more like healing from a wound with severe diabetes. Instead of taking a few days, it can literally take months, and risk of infection and re-injury is not just possible, its likely.
