When you bump a knee, stub an toe, or bang your elbow your immediate instinctual and intuitive response is to rub it to soothe the pain. What attitudes and practices have we internalized which eclipse the benefits of this age old form of touch as the primary healing modality? We have adopted a whole new way of looking at facts, a new sense of what is admissible as fact. The developments of modern philosophy, science, and technology are the primary reasons for our forgetfulness. The rules we presently imagine govern the operation of things are the rules to which we try to adjust ourselves. The things we perceive as being the given in any situation will be the limits within which we understand our problems, conceptualize our choices, and search for solutions. We will not attempt the impossible nor will be forgo the obvious. In our attempts to preserve our health we are least apt to question our received knowledge, most apt to seek out current authorities and assiduously follow their advice. We develop strong conservatism with regard to our selves on one hand which helps us to avoid most catastrophes of the past but causes us to forget many things in the past that are of lasting value.
