When you go into emotional reaction about something, and then get mad at yourself for doing so, even in the smallest of ways like regretting your actions/words, then you are attacking yourself. That makes your subconscious mind even more hypersensitive, causing it to see even more potential perceived threats to react to. This is how you perpetuate the very cycle you want to break. Instead understand that your mind is only trying to protect you when it goes into fight or flight. Slowly, steadily, and gently change the meaning of what your mind is perceiving as threats instead.
