When you like someone, its often difficult to tell that person the truth. I think that is the dilemma most folks in the civil society are facing right now. I have been waiting for ex-governor Kayode Fayemi to publicly refute allegations that he spent a whopping N50 Million naira on sleeping beds. Its mind-boggling!!! Its particularly mind-boggling for two reasons: First, Ekiti State is an extremely poor state, with 99% of its income coming from Niger Deltas oil. Out of all the southern states Ive been to, Ekiti is the least developed, with its environs and peoples living in shocking levels of poverty and ignorance. The city center, Ado Ekiti is nothing but a glorified village. Secondly, Dr. Fayemi is a well-known preacher of accountability, frugal governance and a leading advocate of fiscal federalism. Just like Nigerias pentecostal pastors - like Adeboye, Oyedepo, Oritsejafor, Oyakhilome and TB Joshua - habitually do, its so hypocritical to preach one thing on the pulpit and do exactly the opposite in your private life. Its not right. Certainly not! This is one of the reasons why I think Nigeria wont progress, absent fiscal federalism. With true federalism in place, where would Fayemi see N50M to spend on just a bed? From Ado Ekiti markets and parks? Other governors also spend state funds so recklessly because they dont work for it, so there is no incentive to be creative and ingenious. LEAVE NIGER DELTA OIL ALONE FOR THEM! LEAVE IT ALONE! Biko!
