Whenever I have the chance to work in Gorongosa National Park - TopicsExpress

Whenever I have the chance to work in Gorongosa National Park there is one small place I always try to visit. It doesnt look like much, an almost bare clearing of hard, sunbaked soil in dry, thorny woodland with a few dead tree logs and some scattered leaf litter. There is little change of encountering any wildlife that would attract the average visitor in a National Park but it does have a very special inhabitant. Orbea halipedicola is a rare stapeliad with small but exquisitely beautiful flowers. It is endemic to the Central Mozambique plain. It is only found in very mineral rich, bare patches of soil where hardly any other plants are able to survive. I am hardly ever disappointed as at least one of these little gems will have a flower to show at most times of the year.
