Whenever I hear someone say Its just a dog, or Its just a cat, or Its just a (insert species here), I want to scream. Im not sure which part of the phrase bothers me more - the use of the word it, which implies the creature is simply a thing, or the word just, which implies that animals are inferior to humans. Every species on our planet is comprised of complex, sentient creatures who feel love, affection, pain, and joy. Just as humans do. As someone who communicates with animals, Ive learned that they are deeply feeling, thoughtful beings who are as invested in their life goals and life direction as we humans are invested in ours. - Dobie Houson, Four Legged Wisdom
