Whenever I host SGX, especially internationally, I always ask a random coach to run a warm up for the group. I learned quickly a few years ago that you can learn a lot about a coach, a culture, a style, etc, by watching how they choose to warm people up and at times, get a really good snap shot of the attitudes of the entire group. Well, as usual, I was really pleased with what I saw in Spain this weekend on all fronts. Im not sure if youll be able to tell whats happening in this video, but I asked Coach Toni to run a warm up and he was armed and ready with this. Heres how it goes, everyone runs in a circle and when Toni yells out a number - they must join into a group hug with that many other participants. If theres a person, two people, three people, whatever left out they must do 5 Burpees!! Then, later, after we cycled through a few movements, and had been running circles for 5-6 minutes, he started calling out two numbers. The first was how many people should be in each group, the second was how many people needed to be IN THE AIR, or hoisted up so their feet were not touching the ground. Then, that started a whole new scale of ONE!....all the way to SIX people in the air! - odd person out has to do Burpees. This warm up was hilarious, fun, and had the entire group smiling, laughing and having fun the entire time (which Spaniards are inherently good at anyway, the US needs to take some notes!!) Which ultimately, is the most important skill to possess as a coach - make it fun, dynamic, and get clients having the best hour of their day every single session they train. Coach Toni then followed this warm up with a series of more specific stretches to areas that would need to be stretched for the next workout...best of both worlds. AROO!!
