Where oh where to begin. 1. I have deleted the Civil War/Confederacy thread. That was a pretty toxic looking thread and wasnt anything -resembling- a coherent, polite if strenuous discussion on racism, the nature of it during the Civil War and in the CSA, or such issues. Instead it was a lot of people passive-aggressively sniping at eachother. The few insightful posts that were there got drowned out in a competition of who could be the most outraged. 2. Im not banning anyone. Im well aware that Ive a reputation for being banhappy, though I really have tried to exercise a light touch in my adminning/moderating of this group. I am willing to chalk this argument up to emotional disagreement and people forgetting the rules, rather than trying to shut down conversations with eachother. Im having to stretch my own sense of generosity to do that, but someone very dear to me taught me to expect the best of people, instead of assuming the worst, so its done. 3. The issue is clearly one people cant talk about politely on this board. Civil War and Confederacy threads are not to be discussed on this board without first clearing them with the admin staff and explaining what you intend to accomplish by the post, along with your rationale for how it fits into LAAs message of combating racism. Yep, this is censorship, and yep, its prior restraint. Nope, no apologies for it. The purpose of this board isnt to provide a stomping ground for people who just want to have an argument and compete for more libertarian than thou. Weve had enough of that in other places, and its unequivocally not welcome here, so Ill happily censor the DAYLIGHT out of this place if it means that well have some intelligent discussion. I want LAA to avoid the fate of other places, where theyre just one more yep, those libertarians sure are assholes page that other people roll their eyes at. I want it to be a place where we can engage with right and left alike and show them that we have good ideas, and that were willing to listen to theirs. If that means I have to be the bad guy and say nope, cant post that, then so be it. Final point of clarification: I wont be taking additional action against anyone for what was said in that thread so far. A lot of it was unacceptable, but Im going to try to go the route of reconciliation. That does not mean Ive forgotten. Behave yourselves - we are better than this, and I believe each of us can show that to our guests and members. Have a good evening everyone. William
