Where was I when European colonization of the world was being - TopicsExpress

Where was I when European colonization of the world was being explored and taught in school... more concerned about other stuff I guess. Many of the refugees we have coming to Louisville fled their countries as a result of conflicts and conditions closely tied to European colonization, American capitalism and western Christianity. The stories of these refugees, and my growing care and love for them, seem to be inviting me to cultivate more awareness. Jomo Kenyatta, first President of Kenya, explained colonization something like this: When Europeans came to Africa, they had the Bible and the African had the land. They gave the Bible to the African and told him to hold it in his hand, close his eyes, and pray. When the African opened his eyes, he had the Bible and the European had his land. Our over involvement with cultures and countries that we do know, understand, honor or appreciate has not seemed to fair well for them...or us. Not sure what I think, or even if it really matters what I think about limited military strikes in Syria, but I hope to keep all this in mind.
