Whew! Left NYC for Austin 19 hours ago, just got home. Delayed on the Tarmac 1 hour as they fixed an electrical glitch. Then, we waited another hour in line because weather was diverting flights all over the country. Then, mid-flight, we start to rapidly descend and they announce were making an emergency landing in Memphis due to an unusual smell in the rear of the cabin. Firetrucks were on the scene when we landed, and it appeared to be an electrical fire on the plane. We unloaded in Memphis, and waited in the airport for 2 hours with all 150 other passengers. They were trying to fix the issue and put us back on the same plane (!) but finally they said it was cancelled and wed have to leave in the morning. Another hour passed before they gave clearance to give us hotel vouchers and pass them out to us. We got to our shades-ville Clarion hotel, and one surly night shift worker moved us through at the speed of molasses, taking every call that came through, even chatting with coworkers. The best moment (better than a giant roach on the room light switch) was this irate Asian couple that came back after getting their room. They shouted at the clerk : The room you have us had a naked guy in dere! He was in da room you gave us! We gotta kid! And the clerk realizing she have them the wrong key goes. Uh... Oops. My bad. And gives a different one. Hey-- we made it home safe, unharmed, and even with our luggage! We both have understanding bosses and a cool quiet home waiting for us. Were very thankful, and now have a great airplane story!
