While I appreciate that Senator Feinstein - TopicsExpress

While I appreciate that Senator Feinstein (https://facebook/SenatorFeinstein) replied to my letter and that funds are going to low-income families and children via Head Start. It sickens me that it confirms that funds are spent on cognitive development and no other mention of whole child development or PLAY! It is also sickening that all those funds are poured into Head Start, Race to the Top, and all programs that focus on academic readiness and future paper and pencil success versus real authentic learning and the whole development of the child! We need EC educated people in the top of the government making changes! Ahhh! So I am taking this moment to share this with everyone so that they can see just how long of a road we have to fund DAP Early Childhood programming. Jeanne McNiff Dear Ms. McNiff: Thank you for your letter expressing your support for early education programs. I appreciate hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond. I share your belief that the early childhood years are extremely important to a childs development and future success. As you may know, Head Start provides comprehensive early childhood development services to low-income children ages three to five-years-old and Early Head Start to children from birth to three-years-old. I support federal funding for programs such as Head Start and Early Head Start that focus on nurturing cognitive development to ensure that all children have the opportunity to enter kindergarten ready to learn. The 2014 Consolidated Appropriations Act (Public Law 113-76), which funds the federal government through fiscal year 2014, contains significant investments in early education programs. This legislation provides $8.6 billion for Head Start, an increase of $1.02 billion from the FY13 level. This restores cuts from sequestration and allows for a 1.3 percent cost of living adjustment for all current grantees. In addition, the law includes $500 million to expand Early Head Start and $250 million for Race to the Top Preschool Development Grants, a new program to support states efforts to provide universal preschool to all four-year-old children from low income families. I voted for this bill and it passed the Senate by a vote of 72-26 and was signed into law by the President. Again, thank you for writing. If you have any additional questions or comments, please feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841. Best regards. Sincerely yours, Dianne Feinstein United States Senator
