While I belong to that scatter-brained, category-defying, I know it when I see it school of photograph acquisition, elegantly described by a friend as purely idiosyncratic, aesthetic-based collecting, some truly magnificent collections, great and small, are formed within tightly imposed limits. I think it would be fascinating to hear how other members define, categorize or limit what they collect. I met a collector once who sought only images of ugly women, another specialized in photographs of cakes. One man defined his collection not by subject matter, but by the size of his safety deposit box: when there was too much to fit, something had to go. I would love to read about the quirky collecting strategies of this groups members.
