While doing research for my book I often come across and am able to identify a lot of little-known works by local architects. I figure this would be a fun place to share some of these tidbits about Syracuses rich architectural heritage. I dont live in Syracuse so all of the images I find are via Google maps or other online sources. This is a group of speculative Queen Anne cottages designed in 1882 by Syracuse City Hall architect Charles Colton. They are on the northwest corner of Oak and Gertrude Streets. One of the originally six homes has been demolished. Even in this relatively modest commission, Colton incorporates a lot of interesting features. All of the homes have unique double gables on the side and two of the homes still have their original siding with a half-timbering treatment. They were designed for sale by a Mr. Cortlle (maybe mis-spelled) and Mr. Morris.
