While music critics debate their best-of lists of classical recordings, Billboard has compiled its top SELLING classical artists—most of whom are regulars on KBACH -- Billboards top 15 list included Anne Akiko Meyerss recording of Vivaldis Four Seasons, Yuja Wang and Gustavo Dudamel’s Piano concertos by Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev; and new recordings of Bach by mandolinist Chris Thile, pianist Simone Dinnerstein and violinist Joshua Bell. Hilary Hahns 27 Pieces, a collection of encores by 27 composers that the violinist commissioned broke the top ten. Who was at the very top of the list, though? for the second year in a row, it was the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, a community of nuns from rural Missouri. Their Lent at Ephesus and Angels and Saints at Ephesus – ancient chants and hymns – were the first- and second-best selling traditional classical albums of 2014. what does it mean to have a best-seller in the classical world? Well, the nuns’ Lent at Ephesus,, released Feb. 11 by Decca, sold about 34,000 copies this year and spent 38 weeks on the chart. Angels and Saints, came in second place with 20,000 copies over 45 weeks. Billboards rankings are based on sales data compiled by Nielsen Music.
