While some in my homeland are celebrating all that they are - TopicsExpress

While some in my homeland are celebrating all that they are thankful for today, my new home is mourning the loss of a much loved sportsman. I have been so moved by the expression of respect of the life of Phillip Hughes who died from a tragic accident while playing cricket. I have many times teased my Aussie (and British) friends about the game, but when Gemma fell in love with it at school, we got ourselves a beach cricket set and gave in to the madness. From the shocking images of the accident to the tearful newsreaders relaying the sad ending of his life, the public outpouring of grief is immense. Nothing more touching though than the images popping up on my social media feeds of everyone simply placing their family cricket bats out on the front porch as a solemn display. My friend Mandis picture was the first that I saw and she has allowed me to share it here with you. What I have learned the last two days is certainly not the rules of cricket (I still have no idea what is going on, nor why one game goes on for five days), but that the pride of something a nation raises their children on is a powerful thing. And while Gemma is just a hobby cricketer, I am feeling less of an #expat and very Australian today. I am sending my condolences to the family of Phillip Hughes and to Sean Abbott who must be devastated beyond words. #putoutyourbats instagram/p/v64zmZo1k_/?modal=true
